Review of Donnie Brasco (1997) by Chosen 7 — 05 Feb 2010
I finally watched after years of hearing about how good it is, and I wasn't disappointed one bit. Great film, one of the best crime dramas I've ever seen. Brilliant performances by Johnny Depp and Al Pacino, great supporting performances by Anne Heche and Michael Madsen.
This film showed the realities of being an undercover agent, and how in the process of infiltrating a criminal organization and essentially being one of them; a man can have his mentality infiltrated by the very criminals he's trying to bust.
It showed the effects a deep cover assignment can have on a wife and kids. It also portrays the treacherous nature of the mafia during the '70s very well. Al Pacino's character "Lefty" is a perfect example of how disgruntled and sad some mob foot soldiers might become despite being loyal to the family and their code.
This is a mob film which separates itself from most because it doesn't focus on the boss and how rich and powerful he is; it focuses on the guys at the bottom, it also shows how much some of them have to hustle.
..it shows how much the mafia life is overly glorified. The feel of this film reminded me of "Goodfellas" a little but overall I enjoyed this film more.
