Review of Donnie Brasco (1997) by Grant H — 20 Jun 2014
This is a spot-on depiction of the "other side" of mafiosos. We are so used to the glitz, glamour, expensive suits, and happy-go-lucky alcohol consumption of the other mafia movies that we forget that they are still people, too (even if they are people that don't have the same kind of regard for human life).
This movie takes that three steps further, with Pacino going completely against type to put a "lovable loser" into a mafia body. The chemistry between he and Johnny Depp is palpable, and the fear that they both feel towards Pacino's associates is something you can't help but feel as well.
Throw in a very volatile and effective performance from Anne Heche and a great story, and you've got a must-see.
