Review of Donkey Punch (2008) by Chris S — 09 Apr 2009

The premise of Donkey Punch is pretty interesting, and seen as though sex and violence are so well linked in horror, this concept should have worked very well. Its a shame then that the script, the direction and the acting failed so miserably.

Its a rare treat to see any characterisation in a 'horror' film these days so I was happy to discover that Donkey Punch built up its characters quite well. However, this wasnt particularly a good thing, seen as though absolutely every single character was unlikeable if not detestable. I cant help but stereotype here but all of the characters were chavs, pricks, skanks and genuinely unlikeable people. I know that sounds terrible of me but I guess thats what the film was going for...although I cant figure out why someone would make a film full of unlikeable characters.

Anyway, so all these unlikeable characters have a few problems regarding the controversial 'donkey punch' which causes lots of panic and inevitable deaths. To be honest the story was fine by me, but the unlikeable characters seemed to unintentionally do absolutely everything they could to make the situation worse. The amount of times I actually said to myself "Why the FUCK did you go and do that!?" was astounding. Seriously, these people are dumb, really, painfully dumb.

So aside from the hilariously stupid characters, the terrible script, laughable acting and lack of suspense this 'horror'/thriller really does lack punch. I tried to think of something positive there but it didnt happen.

+ Good premise.

- Terrible execution.

- Unlikeable characters.

- Lack of suspense or any horror for that matter.

- Predictable and annoyingly stupid.

Verdict: Idiots + Boat + Drugs + Sex = Epic Failure.
