Review of Don Juan DeMarco (1994) by Faraz M — 16 Apr 2008
I'd wanted to see this film for a long time, and i'm delighted that I finally have. I had no idea it would be such an endearing and heartwarming little gem. a simple story told through a simple yet insightful screenplay, tasteful and sensitive direction, and masterful performances.
marlon brando and johnny depp are a delight to watch. brando's especially is an infinitely cherishable performance. here's the greatest actor of his generation, one of the most notorious figures of hollywood, playing a regular guy married for many years, an accomplished psychiatrist just 10 days from retirement.
watching the larger-than-life brando bring life to this everyday character is truly a joy. the father of the method so comfortably eases into the skin of his character and with such sensitivity, you're reminded why he's marlon fucking brando in the first place.
as for johnny depp, he's always had a way with eccentric characters. he's lovable. check out his last scene in front of the panel. excellent, excellent acting. his chemistry with brando is exceptional too.
on the whole, a very sweet film that'll warm your heart better than hot coffee.
