Review of Don Jon (2013) by Rudy H — 19 Feb 2014
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Directorial/Writing debut is something of a surprise not because I wasn't expecting him to be a good filmmaker (he definitely is) but because of how unique and singular his style seems to be after only one film.
I'm sure he will be back in the director's chair in the future but one has to wonder if he will stick with the same style. It fit the film's themes but would it apply itself well to another kind of film? Well, in the case of DON JON, Gordon-Levitt has found a wonderful tone and style for his own artistic expression.
His performance is not simply a cut and paste mockery of a jersey shore type douche but something much more fleshed out and endearing. Scarlett Johanssen would be stuck as a caricature is she didn't bring so much to her role as the princess of Gordon-Levitt's "affections.
" This is one her best performances in any film. The script is genuine and outrageous in both its' bold moments and especially in the most subtle. However, the best factor is Julianne Moore who gives something of a shocker not because of her character, but because You sort of forget she's in the film.
(It's not very long, and she appears late into it but when she's there for the remainder the film finds its core and makes the whole film al the better for it. You might think you know what the film I about but I guarantee you you'll be wrong.
I certainly was RATING: B+.
