Review of Don Jon (2013) by Amanda C — 08 Dec 2014
Yes Don Jon is appealing to the lowest common denominator, that's kind of the point. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has hit all the right notes to get popular appeal. It's fast, slick, lots of boobs and Scarlett Johansson as the unbelievably sexy and naive love interest.
Don Jon exploitive in the only way that is remotely accessible. It has a point to make about the way our culture deals with sex and romance as prepackaged over processed unreality. It's not particularly insightful, anyone paying attention has already figured this out, but at least its an attempt to get through to the masses.
Unfortunately, by catering to them the point almost gets lost in the shuffle, but credit to Gordon-Levitt for trying. Extra points for casting a woman 20 years his senior to be the real woman of his dreams.
