Review of Don Jon (2013) by Conrad T — 30 Jul 2015
Great cast! I'd call out Gordon-Levitt's phony Jersey accent if I didn't know some similarly flamboyant, guido-fabulous bros from the ole Garden State.
Don Jon covers some surprisingly uncharted territory. It's a raunchy dramedy that very adamantly preaches the pitfalls of pornography -- specifically, how habitual viewings negatively affect one's intimate relationships. I appreciate the message, but also realize that some may find it a bit heavy-handed. The best this movie has to offer lies in its characters and performances: Gordon-Levitt, Johansson, Moore, and even Tony Danza are all great here.
SEMI-SPOILER ALERT.
The movie lost me a bit, however, as Julianne Moore's character is quietly slipped into the film and then dominates the third act. Her role is important to the journey of Levitt's character (she shows him another path to...true intimacy), but it's at the expense of Johansson's character who is a bit more fun and interesting to watch. I promise that sentiment has nothing to do with her younger...assets. She's just fun is all.
