Review of Don Jon (2013) by Gregoire B — 02 Aug 2015
Like many, I didn't know what to really expect with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directing debut. Not everyone pulls a Ben Affleck and proves that he can act and direct. Well, JGL comes fairly close; the man is miles beyond Affleck in the acting department, but Don Jon isn't as ambitious as his directing exploits. Nor is it intended to be.
JGL took his sense of humor and make a romantic comedy that is smarter than the average rom-com and sweeter than the average one too. Both Levitt and his costar Scarlett Johansson show off their sense of skill and acting ability in this film, displaying effortless chemistry with each other.
Its overall a short movie, but Levitt keeps things moving quickly, and a surprising amount of stuff happens in the 90 minute runtime. Great for a laugh, but it does have a positive message in the scenes and is quite genuine.
