Review of Don Jon (2013) by Nicholas V — 02 May 2014
"Its such a sweet sensation..." A recurring song, and a line that perhaps sums up the theme of 'Don Jon'. Simply a film about a typical 'Don' within the pulling world, who also struggles with a certain addiction. The mere use of this 'secretive' and embarrassing theme was risky, but was the reason for a lot of laughs; the most that I have produced in a long time. 'Don Jon's' quick responses to his typical ladish mates as they all try to work out the prime cuts of females are ingenius and witty. Scarlett plays the protaganist well, delivering her unsurprisingly seductive speech so as to entice Levitt. Despite all this, it definitely is a film of two halves; whilst the first is fresh (perhaps inevitably) and funny, the second half begins to go a bit weird; particularly the introduction of Jon's other love interest. The humour also drops considerably, instead becoming somewhat of a drag. This is unfortunate, as I was looking forward to another 45mins of on the cusp humour and arkwardness.
However the ongoing laughs; particularly in the first half, great concept and light hearted nature makes this still a very enjoyable film and manages to reach the 4 star mark.
