Review of Don Jon (2013) by Michael B — 26 Jun 2015
The alleged central premise of the movie is that writer-director-star Joseph Gordon Levitt's porn addict meathead Jersey boy meets his match with his beautiful manipulative controlling romantic movie loving girlfriend.
But this glib production is more concerned with cleverness than actual insight into its characters. Which isn't to say that JGL doesn't get some laughs out of his premise, particularly with Tony Danza's loutish father at the loud stereotyped family dinners.
As JGL's relationship with Scarlett Johansson's character evolves, he doesn't, which eventually brings things to a halt. Fortunately for JGL, he wrote in Julianne Moore's character, a contrivance of total plot convenience, so he can get a measure of redemption for his character in the final act.
A shallow treatment of shallow people that I would guess Joseph Gordon-Levitt doesn't know all that well.
