Review of Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist (2005) by J P — 08 Nov 2005
i have always loved the exorcist franchise. whether it be for its superb storylines{the exorcist, exorcist 3} or for its pure campy feel {exorcist 2, exorcist the beginning}.the good thing about this particular franchise is thats its sequels and prequels are totally different from one another.
except for the beginning, it felt more like a bad religous soap oprea whose acting seemed forced, and too much cgi, it didnt feel like an exorcist film at all. onto the rejected prequel, the one that exorcist fans would have appreciated alot more.
the film is about faith, and what happens to us when we lose it. the story involves father merrin{stellan skarsgard} and how he lost his faith in world war II germany. it is very believable, and the opening sequence is no doubt one of the films most powerful scenes.
for the sake of not ruining it I will not tell you what the opening sequence involved if you havent seen either of the prequels. fast foward a few years later...... father merrin is now an archeologist and on a dig in west africa, where something has been an uncovered, an ancient church to be exact.
he is accompanied by father francis {gabriel mann} who is helping oversee the dig. eventually we learn that something has been hiding under the church and awoken, when it takes over the body of a young african boy named che che, {billy crawford}.
but the true drama isnt the exorcism itself, but what comes before it. in one scene school children are executed by a local tribesman for listening to father francis and sneaking off to go to his christian school he has opened on the outskrits of the village.
the villagers view the christian man as evil, which is an accurate potrayl in my opinion of the worlds impression of christians. this movie movie me spiritually and emotionally, and it represented the true opinions of the world when it came to religion, people hate it now, even more so than 50 years ago.
rent it, if you must, buy it if you can, .
