Review of Dom Hemingway (2013) by Richard S — 06 May 2014
Dom Hemingway is a short-fused, hot-headed, tough-talking safecracker who has been in jail for the past 12 years all-the-while refusing to name names or incriminate any of his past associates who were partly responsible for landing him in the slammer in the first place.
Jude Law's (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Sherlock Holmes) performance as the charismatic sociopathic Dom is 5-star worthy and it is his best performance in years! Dom meets up with his former partner, the one-handed and down-on-his-luck Dickie (Richard E.
Grant - Dracula) so that they can together "collect" what they are "owed" by their former boss for keeping quiet. Their boss, Mr. Fontaine (Demian Bichir - A Better Life), is difficult to read; but seemingly agrees to their high demands .
.. or does he?! The prickly, not-so-loving Dom also wishes to reconnect with his long estranged daughter (Emilia Clarke - 'Game of Thrones') but she also is unsure of what she wants from him. Oh poor Dom.
With snappy dialogue and an out-of-this-world cocky arrogance all his own, Law owns this film (like Colin Farrell in In Bruges or Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast) and I wish he'd be remembered at the end of the year for comedic performances at the Golden Globes.
You root for Dom but you also kind of hate him. It is unfortunate that the film is "as out there" as his character is because it becomes too much ... but watch out for Dom.
