Review of Dolphin Tale (2011) by Todd B — 21 Jan 2012
Somewhere in here is a really fascinating movie the real life dolphin, Winter, was saved after having her tail caught in a crab trap and rehabilitated after it had to be amputated. However, what we have here is an attempt to pander to the kiddie audience with really lame humor and unnecessary sight gags and 3D.
While I saw this on DVD in 2D, you can totally tell where some cheesy 3D effects were added. It's really a shame because in better hands, this could have been a fascinating story. There's just too much extraneous stuff going on and it just drags the movie down.
The real Winter stars as herself and after the movie makes such a big deal about how she needs this artificial tail, it really concerned me that she was swimming without it for a large portion of the film.
The only saving grace is a lovely score by Mark Isham.
