Review of Dolores Claiborne (1995) by Jessica G — 03 Nov 2008

I have a vision problem which makes it almost unbearable for me to read books, because of my highfunctioning autism I also have a problem remember what I was reading.

Anyway, I decided to read the book anyway and I liked it a lot.

But they forgot so much for the movie which made it a "you must read the book first to understand" kind of movie.

****SPOILER WARNING*****.

I was very dissapointed that they left out when Vera Donovan goes crazy and thinks dust is going to attack her, and Dolores comes in and "saves her".

Then Vera turns sane and dosen't remember anything about something trying to kill her.

I can understand why they left out the poop scene though. XD.

In the movie, it just seemed that Dolores hated Vera to the core, but in the book, she learns to respect Vera and when Vera tells about her husbands "accident", it just felt so real. In the movie, though the acting was outstanding, it just didn't feel right.

My biggest dissapointment was that Joe simply died when he fell down the well.

I was seriously creeped out, in the book, when he kept calling for Dolores and then climbing up, forcing Dolores to slam a rock into his head.

I think the movie was designed so that Jennifer Jason Leigh could have a big part of it, I mean, all the scenes with grown-up Selena could have been replaced with Joe surviving the fall.

Jennifer Jason Leigh I feel is overreacting and her role felt fake.

Obviously, Selena didn't have such a big part in the book, so it was changed for the movie so the main character would be "good looking".

They removed Selena's brothers to make her the only child, so she would be in the spotlight.

Kathy Bates was outstanding, as usual. (though her attempt at an accent she normally dosen't speak was terrible) Too bad they ruined what would be a perfect movie.
