Review of Dogville (2003) by Jessie C — 08 Aug 2010
In my opinion, this is one of the greatest films of all time! Painful and bleak, yet powerful and life-changing, it grips you deep in the pit of your stomach, and causes you to re-evaluate your entire view of human nature.
It probes the ideas of groupthink- Standing by while things happen that you know in your heart are wrong, yet doing nothing to stop them....revenge- Violence and injustice fueling further violence and injustice.
...arrogance - Refusing to hold others to the same ethical standards that you hold yourself to, in the name of moral superiority. These dilemmas only scratch the surface of the depths of this film. Only by seeing these shortcomings of human nature in full, garish clarity can we truly strive to overcome them when they're presented in our everyday lives.
