Review of Dogville (2003) by Adam G — 29 Sep 2008
A relentlessly harsh and emotionally powerful film with one of the most depressing endings ever, Dogville tells a tale of how no-one is how they looks, and everyone has a beast lurking inside them. Lars von Trier's design and direction, while totally against the Dogme stylings he claims the film adheres to, are stunning and clever, and the performances are all strong, Nicole Kidman giving a career-best performance and Paul Bettany and Ben Gazzara doing excellent jobs.
The film develops well, and John Hurt's narration surprisingly takes nothing away from the experience. However, points must be taken off for the failure to adhere to the Dogme Vow of Chastity, and also for the sometimes stilted dialogue.
