Review of Dogville (2003) by Mike L — 16 Nov 2008
One of the few movies where the camerawork has actually made me physically ill, Lars Von Trier's tribute to the evils of America is a great film to watch if you're in a misanthropic mood, and it gets points for legitimately trying something different in terms of the movie's staging, but it's impossible to escape the sense that Von Trier is beating you over the head with his argument about America, and in that context, a) His argument just isn't that compelling b) he doesn't offer any solutions or sense of hope c) the film goes on for far too long to get to the point it needs to.
The cast is good, but most of them are playing ciphers or ideas, not real people. At least the film ends on a high note (the final shot, and the credits at the end, are one of the best things about it).
