Review of Dogville (2003) by Noah R — 09 Aug 2009
Putting aside the politics and the fact that Lars von Trier is first and foremost a misanthropic prankster, this is nevertheless a fascinating if archaic study of the limits of forgiveness and punishment.
This isn't a film to be taken literally; it's an intellectual exercise, hence the Brechtian backdrop. Kidman is a little out of her depth but the supporting cast is extraordinary, especially the underrated Paul Bettany.
I have hated his work in the past but this and Manderlay seem to work beautifully for me.
