Review of Dogville (2003) by Samuel D — 28 Nov 2009
I was apprehensive about seeing this one. Its been in my collection for a long time and the fact that it's stripped down to its rawest form put me off - though this would later become a major positive.
The movie takes place on a stage, as if it were a play. Very few props, lots of imagination. The story involves Grace, a girl who stumbles upon the town of Dogville trying to outrun gangsters who have been chasing her.
She befriends the locals and becomes an integral part of the town - that is until the power hungry town abuses its role as protector of Grace. The story becomes intertwined with betrayal, greed and revenge.
Wonderfully narrated, fantastic visionary work from von Trier and a terrific performance from all actors, especially Nicole Kidman, whom I'm not normally a fan of.
