Review of Dogville (2003) by Edwin T — 06 Jul 2010
Spent a good five years with this interesting looking movie in the back of my mind, always wondering if I would ever find the opportunity to actually see it.
Finally! And what a movie!! Totally worth the wait. Cleverly constructed on sound stages with chalk lines and labels, replacing the kind of background descriptions one takes for granted in a location or studio shot film. This looks like theatre but feels like film. The performances are perfect and addictive, they draw you in, by the final third you have been twisted and turned so much that you have no idea what to think or feel about the shady inhabitants of Dogville.
An unpleasent and utterly breathtaking experience (especially the beautiful and horrific equalibrium of that final scene) Dogville is another masterful addition to Von Trier's occasionally inconsistant portfolio.
