Review of Dogville (2003) by John M — 14 Jul 2011
My first Lars von Trier film. I didn't really know much going in besides the names attached, so I was a little surprised with it being such an avant-garde, surreal film. The set is sparsely there; very minimal with all the buildings being outlined in chalk and labeled what they are.
Grace (Nicole Kidman) comes to a town, Dogville, on the run from mobsters. The town takes her in after she agrees to work for everybody in exchange for cover, but as the story progresses, that's just not enough to keep the town happy.
I loved the way it was told (via the poetic narration of John Hurt) and how it was separated into nine chapters and a prologue. It's a very challenging piece, especially morally. It will raise questions in your mind.
Itâ(TM)s not really for the feint of heart, at it will kind of make you hate humanity. I can't help but feel that this would translate very well to the stage... Very poignant.
