Review of Dogville (2003) by Ben G — 14 Apr 2012
This is a guilty pleasure movie not in the sense that I'm embarrassed if people judge me for liking it, but in the sense that I feel I shouldn't have liked it as much as I did. It's disturbingly and surprisingly realistic, especially in the last ten minutes or so.
I have trouble justifying any massacre like that, which is why it's so hard to wrap my sick little twisted fucking brain around the fact that Dogville might've had it coming. But I'm trying to take it as a satire.
It's kind of the same problem I had with Melancholia. I can accept Melancholia as a portrait of a clinically depressed person dealing with the end of the world, but it's a piece of shit if it's just Lars Von Trier stating what he believes are facts and justifying what the character does.
Just like this. I think this is a great movie. And I'm going to ponder it from quite some time. I still don't know how I felt, but I think I loved it, and I'm pretty sure it's a great movie, and while I don't condone violence and have no desire to hurt people, I'm kind of starting to think that regardless of this being a satire or someone saying "root for this mistreated lady who brutally murders everyone who mistreated her", it's a great movie.
