Review of Dogville (2003) by Artus U — 23 Mar 2009
All of von Trier movies that I have watched so far have been immensely disturbing, Dogville only goes to further that sentiment. Through the story of a simple town, von Trier tries to break the myth of village simplicity. The end is remarkable - a parable on mercy and punishment.
The characters were mostly loathsome. Selfish, greedy, unaccommodating, bitchy and cruel. Using minimalistic sets, the focus was kept on acting and the story, and most actors were very convincing in their roles. Although, the stage setting did make things quite theatrical.
