Review of Dogtown and Z-Boys (2002) by Betsy K — 07 Aug 2008
A stellar documentary from Stacy Peralta, who also directed the breathtaking Riding Giants. In Dogtown and Z-Boys, Peralta chronicles the legends of skateboarding who rose to fame in the netherworld of the sport's history, after its Jan & Dean-era birth and before its Thrasher Magazine-Tony Hawk popularity explosion in the 80s.
The stories are compelling, and the photography and editing are outstanding. The film includes archival imagery by photojournalist Craig Stecyk, who was stylistically far ahead of the curve and set the bar for today's attitude-driven extreme sports marketing.
