Review of Dogtooth (2009) by David P — 18 Feb 2011
A film about the insanity of modern life and its gestures of petty, incessant competition. how capitalistic structures oppress our humanity, distort our language, and encourage rigid, self-righteous yet ultimately arbitrary moral boundaries (the casual violence that pervades the film).
not nearly as allegorical or didactic as im making it seem, but that's definitely the messages subtly coded throughout the film, which is like a more ambiguous haneke flick, self-mutilation and all.
the film is twisted and hilarious, with a climactic flashdance dance scene recreation that conveys the flickering light of hope and longing trapped within perverted, oppressed psychology. the performances are soulful, especially aggeliki papoulia as the thirty-something 'elder.
' her eyes tell the entire story.
