Review of Dogtooth (2009) by Peter A — 06 Jan 2011
What happens when parents try to control every aspect of their children's lives? This is what the father in this strange and disturbing film tries to do. He and his wife teach their son and two daughters a whole new vocabulary and enlist a female security guard to relieve the son of his urges whilst not allowing any of them to leave the confines of their house.
This is their undoing as she introduces the children to the outside world and pretty soon they rebel agaisnt their imprisonment. It is a quiet and surreal movie that is deeply symbolic and beautifully shot.
Interestingly sex is used as both a controling device and the pathway to freedom.
