Review of Dogtooth (2009) by Samual G — 19 Jan 2011
This is probably the most straightforwardly weird movie in history. Such a subtly nutty, nutty film. I don't know what it all meant, or if it even matters. Whatever themes it was trying to explore, it must have done so in a way that was alien to me. Nothing it appeared to be trying to say held any water or was marked with any coherence.
It was engaging enough to sit through and the moments of violence are particularly affecting, but it's not enthralling or enchanting. It doesn't sweep you into it's story. It just exists in front of your eyeballs. In fact, the whole movie's premise seems to be to intentionally hold the audience at bay. There is very little for any human being to identify with here, save maybe confusion. Just silent, sad, lost and awkward confusion.
