Review of Dogtooth (2009) by Cal F — 06 Jun 2011
This is one of the most shocking films I have ever seen. Not because of the violence or gore that you see in modern horror films, but because of the context of it - three young adults being held captive by their parents and are unable to leave the confines of their home.
It is so basic, but majestic, which is something so many films lack - attention; a lot of films tend to try and make the film a monumental event by having so many things happening, this makes the film very bland and lack of attention.
But when films do not try to achieve so much they tend to have much more attention to detail, which is something Lanthimos achieves in "Dogtooth". This is a film people will see either as being pointless or a masterpiece.
It is controversial, but it is not controversial for controversial's sake, which is, again, something that a lot of films do in an attempt to gain publicity for doing something outrageous. It has fantastic acting mixed with a darkly comedic and horrific script and a director who uses minimalism in his approach - however, he sees attention to detail as crucial.
