Review of Dogtooth (2009) by Noah E — 15 Oct 2011
This is by far one of the strangest and most disturbing films I have ever seen, bar none. A Clockwork Orange would be given a fast run for its money in my books. Dogtooth tells the story of a frightening and odd dystopian world that surrounds one family.
Their lives are controlled and spoon-fed to them by the father figure, who has enacted a morality and ethics that makes outsiders shudder. I like to think my argument against "natural" morality is displayed by films like this-if one grows away from external influences and society, one does not know what is right or wrong, therefore morality cannot be said to be inherent to a being.
That's another rabbit hole, however. Dogtooth is strangely sadistic and perverse and completely marred by a terrible ending that resolves nothing and leaves the viewer wondering "Why?" But perhaps that in itself is what makes this film stand above the rest.
While there could have been so much more gained with a better ending, Dogtooth still stands as one of the most stand-out and perplexing movies I have ever seen.
