Review of Dogtooth (2009) by Shyam S — 23 Apr 2012
This really is one hell of a movie. This is one bizarre movie. But a great movie. Three children are virtually locked up in their parents' mansion and their father tells them that only when their 'dogtooth' falls, will they be allowed outside home. This is rather a self-inflicted exile that they all live in. No one else but the father leaves the home to a nearby factory.
This is the manifestation of the extent to which movies can get darker. Really darker. It shows a Cimmerian side of rural Greece with an insane father and his submissive family.
This movie is a difficult watch, sometimes highly difficult, yes, but nevertheless is beautifully captured. It may feel like an erotic movie sometimes but it has a riveting drama at its heart that gravitates us to it.
Dogtooth is really a fairytale of a movie with an heartbreaking ending. An ending that can never be as painful and depressing as in Dogtooth.
