Review of Dogtooth (2009) by David E — 04 Aug 2013
Dogtooth, from Greek director Giorgos Lanthimos, depicts a family were three 20 something year-old children are forbidden from leaving home until their dogtooth has fallen out. Taking home schooling to the extreme, the three children do not know anything except what their parents tell them (e.g. they are taught that the word cunt means 'a very large lamp' and that cat's are among the most dangerous man-eating animals).
From its sharp satire to its taboo breaking plot, Dogtooth manages to push the envelope and to maintain the audience involved. While I can't recommend this Dogtooth to everyone (it is extremely dark at times and contains disturbing material; definitely earns its NC-17 rating), I do believe that it worth a look.
