Review of Dogtooth (2009) by Joe H — 13 Sep 2014
A brilliant and disturbing social allegory with cynical wit to match its contemplation. The meaning of the film could just as easily be applied to overprotective family units as it could to totalitarian regimes, and the subversive genius of Dogtooth in comparing the two is the suggestion that they share more similarities that we'd like to think.
Ultimately though, Dogtooth is about the extremity born of repression and our innate need for freedom, themes that will always accompany dissent in the face of oppression. And while its meandering tone and allegorical oddities will alienate most, this film definitely has an intense bite.
