Review of Dogtooth (2009) by Gareth M — 02 Feb 2015
I bought this after seeing Alps by the same director and wasn't disappointed. It took a while for the penny to drop as to why the youngsters were behaving so weirdly - then I realised it was because mentally they are all aged 8 and live in a world governed by the misinformation supplied by their parents.
It has its amusing moments but it mostly made me think of life inside a totalitarian such as N.Korea where those in authority have a monopoly on what is held to true. Having the children believe that Sinatra singing 'Fly Me To The Moon' is their grandfather singing a song about the joys of home is a nice ironical touch given their own complete lack of freedom.
A very dark comedy indeed - especially the ending which had me with my hand over my mouth.
