Review of Dogma (1999) by Rob C — 13 Mar 2010
With all the inane babble about religion being spewed forth by many believers, it's nice to know this film added it's comedic side to it all. What I enjoy about Kevin Smith is his unorthodox sense of humor, which in turn bleeds into his directing.
Dogma features it's satirical and witty view on Catholicism and adding extra incentive on that certain faith. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have to be the strongest central characters of the film, providing quipping dialogue into their roles.
Who doesn't love the idea of a former angel preaching the word of atheism to a nun? Or even Alanis Morissette portraying God in human form? How about the idea of a Buddy Christ idol by the late George Carlin because his character believes the original idol is too pessimistic? Kevin Smith came into this film with a load of clever ideas that made Dogma shine all the more; and it's because of this that I believe Dogma ranks high in the cinematic universe.
