Review of Dogma (1999) by True Dirt F — 08 Apr 2010

Dogma is worth seeing, its entertaining and comical. Its a Kevin Smith movie so you can expect great dialogue, funny characters, dirty language and unique film making. The cast is an excellent combination of various actors that make the film even more entertaining and funny. If you pay attention you will notice that nearly every major character from previous kevin smith films play a role in dogma. For example, Dante and Randell from clerks are in a few scenes and brody from mall rats plays a central role too. This is the first movie ive seen alan rickman act in besides harry potter where he plays snape. So it was pretty funny watching him play a witty angel after seeing him be so serious as snape. Seriously in harry potter snape acts like he has something up his ass cause hes always so serious and on edge. So to see rickman go from snape to a funny angel is pretty damn funny.

The story has some controversy behind it because kevin smith heavily criticizes, mocks and insults the catholic faith in dogma. I don't mind it, I like the fact that someone made a movie that flat out criticizes and mocks the catholic church. However, at the same time smith incorporates very deep insights and questions about faith and the catholic church into the dialogue. There is just as much philosophical questions and ideas presented in this film as there is comedy. The film gets you to seriously think about faith, god, the catholic church and religion. Thus, dogma is more deep and ideologically meaningful than other kevin smith movies.

Aside from the story and dialogue the action was nothing special. There is no epic battles or demons vs. angels type stuff like in constantine. This isnt an action flick. So do not expect a lot of action. Just enjoy the story, think about the dialogue, think about the messages it conveys and enjoy another entertaining kevin smith movie.
