Review of Dogma (1999) by Liam K — 08 Aug 2010
Clerks scribe Kevin Smith continues his audacious and insanely funny View Askew universe by drifting away from the total over dosage of pot and fart jokes into a smart and personal observation on the most famous controversy in the world: religion. With an all star cast including Ben Affleck, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, and Jason Lee, Dogma delivers the raunchy comedy that is painfully honest and represents both sides of the party. Though I recommend that if you don't like thinking or don't have any religious insight, Dogma probably won't appeal to you.
Unlike his previous films, Dogma becomes Smith's first big adventure disguised as a dark comedy. This leaves the viewer intrigued by Smith's neutral Christian views on religion and its affect on society. Never have I watched a comedy that blended religion and dramedy so well. This can be remembered as being the most grand scale epic of the View Askew universe, leaving an irremovable mark on religion films for all time.
