This movie is in the top ten on my own fav movie list. Why?! Because despite the movie's flaws, a wild barrage of vulgar language and a giant demon made out of poop chief among them, the movie makes some excellent points about the contradictions and hypocrisies of organized religion, and this is a problem every religious group seems to have, not just Catholics.

Watching this controversial film you have to remember that Smith is to this day a devout Catholic. This film is borne from the wrestling he has had with his faith. The film puts our conceptions of the infallibility of God to the test, to the point where even an angel gives God the finger, and finally concludes that it doesn't matter what you have faith in, just that you have faith.

Faith is necessary despite the flaws of your religion or the cruelty of the world. The problems come when you try to oppress people with your religion's dogma. And that is what Smith is attacking here, not God, not Catholicism, the oppression and hypocrisy of dogma itself and those who blindly enforce it.

That is the complexity of this movie with a fair amount of psychological drama and suspense thrown in at key points. Oh and Jay and Silent Bob are in it too. Snoogans!
