Review of Dogma (1999) by John A — 28 Oct 2011
Kevin Smith's Dogma is a fantastic little comedy. It's fuses clever high-end comedy with almost gutter gags to extremely good effect (Mainly thanks to Jay & Silent Bob). It certainly has comedy for everyone.
The premise is ridiculous but works so so well. An abortion clinic worker begins to realise her destiny as she embarks on a mission to stop two fallen Angels getting back into heaven because of a loophole in the Catholic Church.
It's super satirical, fiendishly funny and the script is razor sharp. It all rolls into a rather enjoyable viewing experience. We are introduced to some great characters; Alan Rickman is superb as Metatron, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are on great form together as the two fallen angels - Bartleby and Loki.
In fact every member of the cast do a great job. Kevin Smith's direction is spot on and whether you are a fan of his or not - this film is smart, funny and well worthy of a watch.
