Review of Dog Soldiers (2002) by Jams G — 27 Oct 2008
Insanely exciting slaughterfest from the best new director in Britain. Dog Soldiers is small movie that packs an incredible punch, viewing after viewing.
With nods throughout to the likes of Aliens and Jurassic Park, the film sticks a bunch of army officers in beautiful rural Scotland and has them do battle with werewolves. The results are shockingly good.
Once the annoying generic football banter is out of the way, the officers are revealed as characutures (sp?) but brilliant ones at that. Ultimately you known that most of them are going to end up as a dogs dinner but at least you are rooting for them. The wolves themselves look pretty nasty and the black and white vision and fast moving teases and glimpses of them in early going are played perfectly.
The script is stuffed with some great lines and a humour you wouldn't expect to find in a film like this amongst the gore which is fairly brutal and inventive. The whole thing just comes together in a mass of excitement and tension that we could do with seeing a lot more of. Neil Marshall is a talented director who will hopefully make more of the same.
