Review of Dog Soldiers (2002) by Bob W — 27 Nov 2008
Despite what a lot of people may think, this isn't a werewolf movie with soldiers, it's a soldier movie with werewolves. That's how one of the producers described it and it really nails it on the head.
The writing and the cast of this movie take what could have just been a silly B Horror movie and turns it into an amazingly written and acted character piece about soldiers stuck behind enemy lines (in this case an old farm house in Scotland) and having only each other to count on to survive.
...but instead of surviving enemy forces, they have to survive a pack of werewolves. The werewolves suffer from a low budget but still look pretty decent. They could look 10 times worse and it wouldn't make a difference.
The real attraction of this movie isn't the werewolves, it's the human characters. The writers, actors and everyone else involved really succeeded in making you feel for the characters. No less than watching something like Platoon or Hamburger Hill or any other "soldier" movie.
Though it's not quite as bleak as those movies, this movie is riddled with that dry Brit humor, which to me, just added to this movie's appeal. But not so humourous that you don't take the characters or the situation they are in seriously, but just enough to relieve the tension every now and then, which is one of the main aspects to a really good horror movie.
This movie is a must see to any fan of soldier movies or werewolf movies...or (in my case) both.
