Review of Dog Soldiers (2002) by Floyd C — 26 May 2010
I was very surprised by this little film from director Neil Marshall, the man behind the horror hit "The Descent." I bought the film a few months ago for about seven bucks at Wal-Mart because I had heard good things, but hadn't taken the time to watch it because it's packaged horribly and the description on the back of the DVD case makes it sound like it should be a ScyFi Channel original.
I was wrong to wait, the cast is wonderful as they create, for the most part, likable characters that really reach oput to the viewer. The effects are above average and I don't think that has so much to do with budget as it does with what the camera decides to show the viewer of the monsters and their carnage.
There are several extremely creative and stylish moments in the film that really stick out for me and the score is very basic, yet effective. I'd say this is one for any fan of the genre as well as the casual film viewer who wants to see a good horror film with some interesting characters and a decent plot that keeps the viewer guessing.
