Review of Dog Days (2018) by Jason M — 28 Aug 2018
Dog Days.
Initial Reaction: The dog days of summer?
Main Characters.
Elizabeth: She's an anchor newswoman played by Nina Dobrev.
Dax: A up and coming musician played by Adam Pally.
Walter: He's a widower played by Ron Cephas Jones.
Plot Summary.
This movie is a bunch of smaller plots put together. These include Walter's quest to find his dog after the dog runs away (with the help of a pizza delivery boy), Elizabeth's on and off relationship with another anchor at her news station, and Dax's troubles as she cares for a dog while his sister is giving birth.
SCORING.
Main Characters.
I like Walter the best of the bunch because of the acting job and his character's background. The other two were really bland to me. SCORE: 6.
Supporting Cast.
There are a whole set of other characters in the film, but for some reason none of them really sticks with me. SCORE: 4.
Plot.
The journey with this film felt jarring and confusing because of all the plot threads going on at the same time. There's some really good scenes in here, but the payoff's really lacking. SCORE: 5.
Originality.
If you take an average romantic comedy and shove a bunch of dogs into the mix, then you'd get this film. But some of the characters do stand out while others just felt like pale imitations from other films in the genre. SCORE: 6.
Violence Factor.
Not much going on here except for someone gets a face full of mace that is played for laughs. SCORE: 8.
Other Moral Issues.
This film does a good job of showing just how dogs can make a huge difference in people's lives. But that message is scattered across several plot lines making it slightly confusing. SCORE: 7.
Final Score (out of 60): 36 % Score: 60%.
It's got cute dogs and a few good stories - but other tales are just too rehashed from other rom coms for me to really enjoy.
