Review of Dog Day Afternoon (1975) by Rob H — 19 Aug 2011
It's based on a real robbery in Gravesend, but filmed in a different neighborhood in Brooklyn, Windsor Terrace. The hostage situation is interesting in itself, where Wojtowicz (the real name of the bank robber) wins over the crowd and the police become the bad guys.
There's more of a historical perspective in the setting of the movie. The bank robber was a Vietnam vet and an anti-establishment type. The attica prison riot in 1971 killed 39 people and was a black eye for New York State, and actually, the entire prison correction system.
It's also took place before the Stonewall riot and the Gay Liberation movement, which is why the directors downplayed that part of the story. It isn't a freak show, it's a story where two people who love eachother can't really live with eachother.
