Review of Dog Day Afternoon (1975) by Cameron W — 23 Jun 2013
A masterfully crafted film that starts fast and doesn't let up until it's over. The directing is perfect, Lumet keeps the pace quick, but not too quick. Just like the robbery, it moves as if it is supposed to be over quick, but continues on and on with different exhillerating turns.
I honestly don't believe the directing could have been any better. But then there's Al Pacino, whose performance is so adrenaline-filled and emotionally palpable that it catapults this film from great to a masterpiece deserving of classic status and every bit of acclaim it gets.
This is a near perfect film, and it's influence is well-deserved and very apparent in today's heist and thriller films. Oh, and not to mention the very well placed comedy that is exemplified by the fact that all the hostages are just chilling in the bank being buds with the bank robbers, smoking and eating pizza.
One of the greatest thrillers of all time, without a doubt.
