Dog Day Afternoon is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. In no way is it weak. It should honestly be ranked up there with the likes of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Citezen Kane and even The Godfather. It works on all factors: funny when it wants to be, exciting when it needs to be, but most of all it's emotional.

One of the best things about this film is that it hasn't aged in the slightest. The whole situation in the film (regardless of it being a true story) could happen today, and still make great day time TV. But truly the highlight here is Al Pacino's performance of his career. I shit you not, no matter what you think of the film, you will come out thinking you've just witnessed one of the most kick-ass performances ever. What makes it so good, is that it is the anti-Pacino role. He's not the tough man on this one, nor is he charming, in fact he's quite the oppositite. He's a sad, pathetic little man, but the director makes damn sure we sympathise with him.

I honestly think this is as close to flawless a picture can get. There's so much stuff to it that it's suitable for any audience. You'll be blown away upon first viewing, but watch again and again and it will soon hit you as to why it's considered a classic.

I also just want to note on John Cazale's brief, tragic career. Whilst never being the primary protagonist in any of his 5 films, every one of them was nominated for Best Picture. He clearly added emotionalism and symbolism to every feature. While he doesn't do much talking in this particular feature, just by looking at him you can tell how he feels. Now that's good acting.
