Review of Dog Day Afternoon (1975) by Ryan H — 24 Sep 2010
Brilliant. Sidney Lumet is such a great filmmaker (minus his last couple of films). The scene "Attica! Attica! Attica!" is so memorable. The way that comedy is mixed in with the movie made me truly think about what was going on.
In the Time Magazine article one of the hostages said the real life scene was a lot like a farce. It was crazy how everyone was rooting for a guy like Sonny. He never seemed like he was going to harm anyone, but he also was robbing a bank.
Not really the best kind of person. The funniest part (and another true fact) is that he was robbing so that his "wife" could get a sex change operation. I am disappointed that the producer was stupid enough to pay Sonny money for the rights to the movie.
Who would do that? He wasn't robbing it for the greater good of the people. He didn't do anything right. Why did he get paid? In my opinion, this is, from what I've seen, the best performance by Al Pacino.
He can completely take you from laughing to feeling the stress of the situation. A must see.
