Review of Dog Day Afternoon (1975) by Nick O — 12 Apr 2011
Jaw-dropping and enormous, within Sidney Lumet's "Dog Day Afternoon" is one of the most intellectually trying movies ever made. Sonny and Sal are just a couple of everyday swinging Dicks before holding hostage a Boston bank to pay for Sonny's gay partner's sex change.
And it's all downhill from there. As "Dog Day Afternoon" grows louder and louder the stakes get bigger and more intense, and as restlessness overcomes fear, Lumet's film becomes an alien dance of seduction, thanks to a dynamite one-man show by Al Pacino.
He acts like the world is at his feet only because he didn't ask for it to be.
