Review of Dog Day Afternoon (1975) by Adrienne L — 01 May 2011
'Dog Day Afternoon' offers one of Pacino's finest performances to date. Here he plays a fumbling bank robber trying to steal money from a bank in order to pay for his confused lovers (Chris Sarandon) sex-change operation.
Its a risky role for such a huge movie star like Pacino to have taken, but it paid off. Pacino recieved a well-deserved Oscar nomination for his dedicated work in the film. He is the center of the movie and he handles the subject matter with class and professionalism.
The supporting cast including Charles Durning and John Cazale (ironically he played also Pacino's brother Fredo Corleone in The Godfather - Parts 1 &2). He died of cancer 3 years after this film was made. In the movie his character tells one of the hostaged bank teller's that she shouldn't smoke to avoid getting cancer. That's what he died of in 1978. Irony, right?
'Dog Day' garned six Oscar nominations in total. It won Best Original Screenplay. The story is based on real life events that took place in Brooklyn back in 1972. The writer based his screenplay on an article that was published in 'Life' magazine. A personal favourite.
