Review of DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story (2004) by Jim M — 01 May 2011
Meet Peter La Fleur (Vince Vaughn) owner of Average Joe's Gym. He's in trouble, the bank is about to foreclose on him, which will allow White Goodman (Ben Stiller) of the rival Globo Gym to buy Average Joes and turn it into a parking lot for Globo. Peter needs to raise $50,000 before the month is out. The solution assemble the memebers of Average Joes ( Justin Long, Stephen Root, Joel Moore and Alan Tudyk as my personal favorite Steve the Pirate) aided by a smokin lawyer (Christine Taylor) and couched by Dodgeball legend Patches O'Houlihan (Rip Torn) to compete in a Las Vegas Dodgeball tournament and win the $50,000.
It'll be a sin if this doesn't become a classic. Perfectly paced with humor a plenty and memorable roles from Vaughns laid back Gym owner (he hasn't bothered to collect membership fees in 13 months) to Stillers overcompensating douchbag. Justin Long is as likable as ever (I want to hate him but God dammit I just don't have it in me) and Stephen Root plays what could be Miltons cousin (his role from Office Space). Torn is great as the mental couch (you've heard his line "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball"), Steve the Pirate is underused but its amusing how everyone just goes along with him without question. Look for Gary Cole and Jason Bateman as the tournament commentators and William Shatner as the Tournament Commisioner. There are also cameos by (SPOILERS)*. See it.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER.
*Chuck Norris and Lance Armstrong (delivering one of the greatest verbal shaming in history).
