Review of DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story (2004) by Sean N — 24 May 2014
Dodgeball is an okay comedy, nothing all too special, but what keeps this being an okay comedy is the good humor. The bad humor in this movie is mostly pop cultural references and seeing them again really makes this film feel older than it actually is.
There are many moments of humor that can be unexpected at many points with some nice follow ups mostly with Rip Thorn's character who teaches the the unlikely team about dodge ball. Most of the other characters have their little stories that all get a happy ending so it can be predictable at times, but along with the goofball elements that reminds me of the 80's, it also carries the pure fun of some 80's films like Karate Kid.
You know the main characters will win, but you want to see that. Another reminder of the 80's in general is Stiller's character being the obvious jerk. Again this makes you want to see the main characters win because there are just these over the top villains in not so serious situations, seeing their reactions are great.
I would say the most memorable line would be the five D's of dodge scene, but overall it's wasn't that ground breaking and it easily got forgotten along with Vince Vaughn's career.
